Reader’s Question:

Is it true that insurance providers offer car insurance discounts for teenager who take a Driver Education course?

Blanche

Los Angeles CA

Insurance providers do give a car insurance discount for young drivers that have taken a driver education class. These insurance providers believe that it is important for new young drivers to take a driver education class if offered by the insurance provider since it is helpful as they learn to drive automobile for the first time.

In some states it is required for the young drivers to take a driver’s education class and that is why no car insurance discount is given to some. Defensive driving class or driver education course are also used by most states in lieu of driving points after receiving an individual receives a traffic offense violation.

What Are The Different Types of Car Insurance?

There are actually different types of car insurance. The best thing to do is to figure out what type of policy best fits your needs. Most states would actually require you to have a minimum amount of liability insurance. These insurance includes bodily injuries which pays your legal fees and claims made against you, if you or someone driving your car with your permission, kills/injures someone. Its the same with property damage liability, only this covers legal fees and claims against you or someone driving your car with your permission for damaging someone else’s property.

In some cases when you are hit by uninsured, underinsured or a hit and run drivers, a few states require you to have uninsured motorist coverage which pays for medical fees and property damage expenses for you, your family and your passengers. This is only available in few states so you may discuss this with your local agents.

You might also want to consider the type of cars you are (or going to be ) using when purchasing an insurance. You may carry collision and comprehensive coverage if you’re driving a late model car. The collision covers payment for repairs due to fire, vandalism, theft and other acts of nature. But if you are driving an old car, it would be best to drop collision and comprehensive coverage altogether especially if the car is worth less than the insurance.

I would also suggest that you insure with the same company if you have more than one car. This can save you on your yearly premiums. You may check with your local agents for the best car insurance rate.

If you are still shopping for a car though, you may choose a low maintenance and low profile cars. Cars that cost a lot for repairs, cost a lot more to insure.

And of course, if you’re a student or a teenager the best way is to take a driver’s education course and keep a clean driving record. Like what they always say: “drive safely”.

Just remember that when it comes to car insurance, comparison shopping is difficult. Just be aware of the combination that contribute to your premiums so you may know what policy to get.

In any State, the way to have the best rate for car insurance is to have a clean driving record. In New Hampshire, if your car is not financed but you have a spotless driving records, you are not required to buy any car insurance. But this has limitations. For instance, if you are convicted of a DWI (Driving while Intoxicated) or DUI (Driving under the Influence) you will be required to buy for at least 3 years of car insurance. So best way obviously to get or keep your insurance low is to drive safely and obey traffic rules all the time.

You may also consider dropping your car insurance if you are driving an old car. Your car insurance wont pay for the repairs anyway.Check for any programs with your insurance company regarding driver’s refresher course. This would help lower your monthly premiums if you are 55 or older.

If you are a teenager and still in school, make sure to get a clean driving record. Check with your insurance company also if you are entitled to a “Good Student Discount” on their car insurance.

Make sure you check online and shop around so you can compare car insurance prices. This will ensure you of getting the best car insurance rate in New Hampshire.

Goodluck!

Car Insurance For A Student Driver With a Learner’s Permit

Reader question:

My fifteen year old just got her learner’s permit. I know that I (or another responsible adult) has to be with her whenever she’s operating a vehicle, but does she still have to have auto insurance?

C.J

Yes, she does.

I know that most of the time taking out an auto insurance policy is considered to be something that you do when you own a car and, obviously, when you already have your license, but it goes a lot farther than that. There are people who have to insure their vehicles even when they are broken down and on wood blocks in the backyard, so it makes sense that someone who is actively driving a car should be insured, even if they don’t qualify for their full license yet.

It’s extremely important to get car insurance for the student driver as soon as your teenager is driving in some way, shape, or form, whether they go straight to their full driver’s license or whether they start out with their learner’s permit. Having car insurance is a big deal for new drivers because they need it more than anyone else. Having less experience, they are more prone to make mistakes and be less able to react to emergency situations. For this reason, having a car insurance policy there to back them up is really important.

Not every car insurance company is going to give you coverage for somebody who does not have their driver’s license yet, but you still need to get it, even if it means looking around for a little bit or getting some free car insurance quotes online. Compare companies and their rates so that you can get the cheapest car insurance for the student driver, and it should not be that hard at all to find somebody who will cover your child while she still has her learner’s, even if it will cost a lot. The cost is something that you mostly have to accept as a parent insuring his or her child, although there are ways to diminish it.

Car insurance for the student driver with a good driving record

Personally, I think I would be more likely to purchase auto insurance (or anything, really) from a company that was run by aliens. It seems like it would be easier to get a claim through with them because they have less experience cheating humans out of their money than other car insurance companies run by earthlings. Paying way too much for car insurance for the student driver is one of the hardest things about young people getting insured with their vehicles, and although I can’t guarantee you that Mercury is going to save you from that (although you can get free online auto insurance quotes to find out), I can tell you some ways to save that are pretty much universal among all auto insurance companies.

We’ve already discussed the good student car insurance discount, which is one of the easiest ways to get a break on the amount you are paying on your auto insurance for your teenager (or for yourself, if you are that teenager). As a recap, what that involves is a discount of between five and ten percent on your insurance policy if you have a B average or better or, in some cases, make a 3.0 or better. This is not the only way for student’s to get discounted car insurance, though.

One of the reasons that students have to pay so much to begin with is because, since they are new drivers and thus less experienced, they aare statistically more likely to get into an accident that will require a claim to be filed. They are also statistically more likely to cause the accident, and to have mre serious ones. How do you prove to the car insurance company that you’re not like that? By keeping a good driving record. This doesn’t mean you’ll automatically start paying the same amount as someone older than 25 with a good record, but it will take a lot off of the normal young person price.

There will be a different requirement for your driving record depending on where you go, so make sure you ask around and maybe go online to get some free quotes. Some companies are okay with a year’s worth of clean record to get the discount, so you could get it as young as 16 or 17. However, some require five years, so you’ll have to wait until you’re halfway through college already. Either way, it helps you save on car insurance while you’re a student and much longer.
