Reader Question:  I am looking for better auto insurance for my new car than my previous insurance coverage. I had Sta@@ Far@ insurance for years, but they seem to slowly but surely raise their rates over the years.  I got a new car and they have once again raised my rate, so I am ready to shop around.

Stanley,

Boston MA

Stanley,

Good for you!  Checking your auto insurance rates every 3 years is a great idea.  This is a pretty common tactic for many agents, they slowly raise your premiums but the increase is so low that they know you will just put up with it. But over the years, so incremental increases really add up to a lot.  Checking around will almost always result in lower rates….at least until year 3 until the new company starts to jack up your rate ever so slowly.

The zip code form above is for Comparison Market, they are a leader in comparison insurance shopping. They will compare 12 companies for you….instantly, and for free…and there is no obligation to do anything.  Once you see the results, which you will online, you can select each carrier and learn more about their offer and the coverage they are offering you and of course the price.

Honestly, this is the fastest and easiest way to shop around for car insurance.  Try it now…and post your comments after you get the rate quote. We want your feedback!

Reader’s Question:

I am a working mom with two daughters. I would be adding my teen daughter under my car insurance policy soon. I am afraid that I will be charged of higher auto insurance rate. That’s why I’m doing everything that I can to check on the things that would help me save on my car insurance premium in West Adams, Colorado. I am just wondering why is it expensive to insure teens?

Trinity

West Adams, CO

I totally understand your situation. I am a mom too and adding my teen son under my car insurance policy is a nightmare. As you see Trinity, it is a fact that higher number of deaths for teens are mainly because of vehicular accidents. And that’s one of the main reasons why it expensive to insure teens nowadays.

To be exact, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, vehicular accident is the cause of death for one-third of people with ages ranging from 16 – 20. That’s a very high number I would say.

There’s still hope that you could save on your auto insurance rate in West Adams, Colorado. You could ask your car insurance agent for one. And I would also suggest checking on the websites is a very effective way of getting competitive car insurance rates from different insurers.

Reader’s Question:

Is it true that insurance providers offer car insurance discounts for teenager who take a Driver Education course?

Blanche

Los Angeles CA

Insurance providers do give a car insurance discount for young drivers that have taken a driver education class. These insurance providers believe that it is important for new young drivers to take a driver education class if offered by the insurance provider since it is helpful as they learn to drive automobile for the first time.

In some states it is required for the young drivers to take a driver’s education class and that is why no car insurance discount is given to some. Defensive driving class or driver education course are also used by most states in lieu of driving points after receiving an individual receives a traffic offense violation.

Reader’s Question:

What kind of insurance discounts can I get from insurance providers in Kentucky if I am turning 50 next month. In addition to that I also have a good driving record for several years.

Martina

Lexington-Fayette, KY

Congratulations on having a clean driving record for many years. If you are lucky enough to be retired, some insurance companies will provide a discount to retirees receiving a certain type of pension. There are also some discounts provided to the mature driver however many insurance providers start this discount at age 55.

There are also other discounts that you may want to ask for when renewing your car insurance or starting a new one. Some insurers will give you a discounted rate for low-mileage vehicle use, two or more cars on one policy or having loss prevention devices installed in the car (car alarm, etc). Many insurance providers in Kentucky will give long-time policyholders with no claims and a good driving record or safe driver discount.

Student Driver Insurance – Can You Get a Discount?

Reader question:

My son is going off to college next month. How do I save on my car insurance with him?

Mandy

Great question.

There are a lot of concerns that need to be on a parent’s mind when they send their kid off to college for four years, and car student driver insurance shouldn’t be the least of those concerns. As a student who is entering what we call the real world for the first time, your son will need your guidance in getting some of the basic things he will need while he’s away, such as car insurance. And considering the antics kids can get up to while they’re away are college, having that back up is a necessity.

There’s a lot of stuff that goes into how much you get charged for your teen’s car insurance.

  • Location.

If you’re teen is going off to school in a different state, then they will probably have different car insurance rates while they are there. Rates are often based on location, which is why when you get rate quotes online you have to put in your zip code first. If you intend to keep your teen’s car with insurance on it while they’re away, then the car has to have your name on it.

  • Grades.

Your kid can get a discount on car insurance just for doing what he’s supposed to do right now, which is succeed in school. A lot of car insurance companies, maybe even all of them, give good student discounts for teens that make at least a B average. All you need is a report card or the college equivalent.

  • Should they keep the car?

If you keep your kid insured while they go a long way away for college but you don’t send a car with them, then you can save a lot. Your kid will still be covered when driving someone else’s car, though.

  • Independence.

It might be a good idea to get your student to take out his own car insurance policy. This might teach responsibility which is necessary in someone who is new to adulthood, but you have to think about the consequences as well. Car insurance for people under the age of 25 costs a lot, and it’s cheaper if he is part of your policy.

Good Driver Insurance – Do Air Bags Help Lower Rates?

Reader question:

I’m getting a new car and they give you the option to pay extra for side impact air bags. If I do this, will I get cheaper rates on my car insurance premium?

Randy

Probably.

Everything depends on the company, but most car insurance companies will give you safe driver insurance discounts when you add safety features to your car, especially when those features are air bags. You don’t necessarily get more of a discount the more safety features you add, but if you make an effort to diminish the possibilities of extreme damage when or if your car gets into a crash and needs collision coverage, then you are going to get rewarded for it by your company with a car insurance discount.

Some people wonder if we even need side air bags. Every car that comes out on the market is so loaded down with safety features that it’s enough to make people wonder if it makes any sense. Can all of that so called safety really save lives, or is it just a gimmick to sell cars? Accidents still happen right? Right, but less do, and the ones that do cause less damage and injury when there are safety features involved, so this trend will probably continue.

At the beginning of the year, crash tests were performed with cars that did not have side impact air bags and then the same type of car that did, to see what the differences were in the results. It came out that they really do work and can save lives. This is especially important for side impacts, which cause most of the fatalities in accidents because they hit at least one passenger or driver head on. Side impact air bags decreases the possibility of both injury and death, and for that reason car insurance companies are rushing to hand out discounts to anybody with these.

Safe Driver Insurance Discounts For SUVs?

Reader question:

Do sports utility vehicles get the safe car discount?

Greg

Um. No

It’s true that SUVs might be safe for the person that’s driving them. After all, they’re big and strong, and most of the newest ones come with plenty of safety features, enough to make any car insurance company happy. However, your company can’t just think about you when it’s deciding on rates for safe driver insurance plans. If you get into an accident in which you are at fault, then the other driver in the situation is going to come after them for a claim payment, and that’s where the safety of your SUV ends.

SUVs can protect their passengers very well, but they wreak havoc on other cars. A lot of this has to do with their size. However, this isn’t the only thing involved. A critical factor in the results of a collision with an SUV is the SUV’s bumper. The reason that the bumper can cause problems is because it is on a different level than are the bumpers of smaller cars. Bumpers exist so that they an take the brunt of an impact in a head on collision with another car. However, in the case of a crash between an SUV and a compact car, the SUVs bumper isn’t going to touch the other car’s bumper–instead, it will be aimed towards the window where the passengers and driver are, causing more damage to the vehicle and more of a chance of injury and loss of life to the people.

SUV bumpers are put on them mainly for show, as they have no real protective qualities. Even if a truck and an SUV got into a crash with each other, the bumper would just collapse because it doesn’t have enough power behind it to absorb the force of the other vehicle.

Getting in SUV will mean that you pay more for your insurance premium, not less. SUVs are considered part of the higher risk pool of cars, even if they do well on safety crash tests. If you want to buy this kind of car, don’t expect to get a safe driver insurance plan. Expect to pay.

How To Get Cheap Student Car Insurance

Reader question:

My son is now driving age and we want to get him car for his sixteenth birthday. He wants a convertible, but that’s not only out of our price range, but we know we’ll already be paying a lot for his car insurance even without such a car. How do we choose a car that he likes but that will still get us cheap car insurance rates?

Millie

There’s always a way.

Yikes! A convertible, eh? Getting a convertible is a bad idea for anyone, of any age, who wants to save money on their car insurance. I still want one, though. It’s good to see that you understand that and are willing to take the time and energy out to make a good decision on your son’s car in terms of how much the insurance costs, and it’s also nice to see that you’re very willing to take his own desires into your decision as well. Many parents eithe will just get their kid whatever car they want to get him, without considering feelings, or get the kid any car they want. People should know that there is a better, safer alternative to getting a student car with cheap driver insurance.

There are several qualities to a car that you buy for your teenager that will make it look better in the eyes of the car insurance company. You don’t have to adhere to all of them because, let’s face it, not everybody wants that one kind of car. Just because you go with most of the aspects but leave one out does not mean that you will be paying half of your annual income on student driver insurance. Here are a few factors that should go into your decision for buying your teen a good car for cheap driver insurance.

  • Safety. Car insurance companies love safe cars, and there are many ways to make this happen. Having plenty of airbags is one, as well as having a lot of those modern safety features such as stability control, antilock disc brakes, and rollover sensing ability. The safety of the drivers and passengers isn’t the only thing that the car insurance company considers, either. Having theft protection installed is a great way to get cheaper rate quotes.
  • Size. This is also a factor of the safety aspect. Bigger is not always better, and neither is smaler. Many parents get their kid a bigger car because they think it is safer, and many get their kid a smaller car because they think it is cheaper and more fuel efficient. However, the safest car for both its driver and everybody else on the road is a midsized vehicle.
  • Car facts. Knowing about how the vehicle rates in various areas is a good way to insure that you will get a good car insurance quote. Did it do well on safety tests? Is it considered the type of car that is likely to get stolen? If it’s in good standing here, then it will also be with your car insurance company.

What Kinds of Car Alarm To Get For Cheaper Car Insurance?

August 10, 2007 by fashun · Leave a Comment

Reader question:

I’m in college away from home and it’s not exactly a normal college town that I live in. There’s hardly any public transportation, and that’s what I’ve used all of my life, so once I got here I had to buy a car. I’m trying to figure out ways to save on car insurance, and I’ve come to getting an alarm system. What kind do they give you discounts for?

Benjamin

There are three kinds of alarms.

Some people, when thinking about alarm system discounts for auto insurance, think that they apply to just any type of alarm system, and they don’t. Insurance companies are smarter than you think. They know that an alarm system on a car that just involves the headlights blinking and a whirring noise isn’t going to make anybody feel alarmed. I know that when I’m at home at night and hear a car alarm go off outside, it never occurs to me that somebody might actually be trying to steal a car. Most people ignore such alarms in the same way.

That’s why, if you want a car insurance company to think you’re serious about getting an alarm equipped on your student car and cheap driver insurance, then you need to follow their rules when it comes to installing an alarm system on your car. Like I said above, there are three separate types of alarms.

  • Noisy ones. These are the ones that go off like an ambulance. They can also be pretty hard to activate. My friend’s alarm on her car can be activated by opening a door from the inside after the car has been off for a couple of minutes. The only time I’ve heard my alarm go off on my car is when I accidentally push the big red button instead of the unlock button. Don’t push big red buttons.
  • Mechanical. These are the kind that you will find on most cars. They lock the steering wheel.
  • Electronic Immobilizer. These are the best kinds, although a little rarer. They immobilize the car making it to where it cannot be started, even by hot wiring.

The kind that the insurance companies like best is the last one, but that isn’t the only requirement for your alarm system. You have to have an active one. That means that it is always ready to detect theft. If you get a passive one, then you have to activate it every time you leave the car, which leaves a lot of room for the fickleness of human memory.

I Need To Find Safe Driver Student Car Insurance

Reader question:

If we overdo the safety, can I get my daughter a student car with cheap driver insurance? Is cheap student insurance even possible?

Ellis

I’d say no.

That is to say, getting cheap cheap cheap insurance rates for a person under the age of twenty five isn’t really possible unless you redefine the word cheap. I’d say cheap is about fifty dollars a month, but then it might be cheaper than that. I don’t know. It will be a few years before I get to see the cheap side of driver insurance. However, what you can do if the person you are insuring is under 25 is save a lot of money on car insurance, even if it wouldn’t necessarily be cheap by your own standards. You have to put things in different groups. If you get your kid a safe student car, cheap driver insurance can be a very possible reality, if you define cheap as…cheaper than incredibly expensive.

I’m not here to lie to you. That’s just the reality about student driver insurance. There are plenty of ways to save money though, one of which is to get your kid a good student discount if they make a B average or higher in school. Another very popular way is to make sure you have the right kind of car to insure your kid on. Then, not only are you protecting your child’s interests, but you’re saving money as well.

Here are some guidelines for buying a student car:

  • Keep it safe. Things like plenty of safety features and good crash test scores make insurance agents see gold. Statistically, cars that take less damage and cause less injury are going to be involved in fewer claims. However, remember that just because government crash test results say one thing that doesn’t mean that you will pay a cheaper rate for that car. Many insurance companies go on individual experience rather than outside information.
  • Keep it low key. Flashy sports cars with lots of luxury equipment are more likely to get stolen or vandalized, and also are more expensive to replace, so you’ll be paying out more.

Cheers,

Fashun Guadarrama.
