Reader’s Question:

My son is 30 years old. He let his car insurance lapse. His car insurance has been canceled for non-payment over the past years. So now he can’t seem to find an insurance carrier to insure his car in Savannah, Georgia. How can he get car insurance now?

Daniel

Savannah, GA

Due to your son having car insurance lapse previously, he is now considered a high risk driver. For drivers such as your son that are unable to find an insurance carrier in the voluntary market that will insure them, many states have high risk insurance companies that will cover these types of drivers.

High risk drivers in Savannah, Georgia typically have to go the GA Automobile Insurance Plan (GAAIP). It was created to give car insurance coverage to eligible high risk drivers who seek coverage and are unable to get such coverage through the voluntary market.

To find out who these insurance companies are in Savannah, Georgia and how your son can obtain auto insurance in GA through the GAAIP so that he can insure and use his car contact the GA Insurance Commissioner.

Reader’s Question:

If Im driving a company car, do I need to use my own insurance?

Molly

Thank you for asking.

All vehicles that is being use in the public road must be insured by the owner in accordance with the state laws. You company is the one responsible for the insurance and for making sure that the vehicle that is being used by the employees are properly insured.

In case of accident, the insurance usually follows the vehicles,, so the insurance on that vehicle should be used as the primary insurance, and your own insurance will kick in if the damages on that vehicle exceed the limits of the insurance on that vehicle. So in most cases, if you are not driving your own vehicle, if its owned by a friend or by the company, you are not required to use your own insurance on that vehicle

It is usually advised that you carry a non owners insurance policy to cover yourself if you are driving some one else’s car. In case the owner of the vehicle insurance lapse or if the limits on the policy are low, then this would give you an additional insurance protection.

You might need to contact your company’s insurance provider to check on the insurance policy on the company vehicle and check the coverage that is provided to you when you drive it.

Goodluck!

Reader Question: What can I do to easily lower my car insurance rate. I am a good driver and drive very short distances. I hear this phrase “limited use vehicle” mentioned…..do I qualify for that?

Frank

So you are a good driver huh? One way to lower your car insurance rate would be to lower your annual mileage you put on your vehicle. This is commonly refered to as a “limited use vehicle” meaning you only drive this vehicle short distances on a limited time basis. Maybe you only go to and from your work…which happens to only be 5 miles away from your home.

Lowering your annual mileage will lower your premiums drastically. Often, auto insurance providers will base their rate quote on the driver driving 12,000 miles a year.

if you really are a safe driver like you say you are, I would work out how many mile’s you will actually drive each month contact your insurance company about a “good driver” insurance discount and the fact that you fit into the limited use vehicle category. If they really want your business they will fight for it.
