Reader’s Question:

My friend is asking me to loan my car to her because her car is in the repair shop. What I would like to know is if she’s involved in a car accident, whose auto insurance coverage would pay for the damage? Would it be mine or hers? We are both from St. Paul, Minnesota.

Tatiana

St. Paul, MN

With your question, I am assuming that your friend has her own auto insurance policy. If that is the case, in an event that she is involved in a car accident using your own vehicle it her own car insurance policy that would cover for her injuries. However, the case is different though if she doesn’t have car insurance policy. If that is the scenario then, according to the Minnesota Department of Commerce the “basic economic loss benefits” will be covered by your car insurance company.

As to the damage incurred on the vehicle, it will be paid by your own auto insurance company. This is depending though if you have collision and comprehensive policies. For other cases, it might also be covered by the car insurance policy of the other vehicle.

For more information, do check the information on your auto insurance policy. Also you could ask your car insurance agent in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Cheap Vehicle Insurance Rates In Houston Texas

Reader’s Question:

I was surprised when I renewed my car insurance. I was charged a higher rate because I moved to Houston, Texas. I use to live in a suburban district also in Texas. Does living in a city really warrant an increase on my car insurance rate?

Deidre

Houston, TX

Always remember, Deidre, that automotive insurance companies compute premiums based on risk factors. The combination of these different risk factors will determine the eventual amount of premium you will have to pay. Most insurance companies take into consideration the following factors that may affect your car insurance premiums: Geography, age, marital status, gender, driving record, vehicle, credit rating, occupation, and insurance claims.

Since you mentioned you transferred to Houston, Texas and got an increase in your premiums, this means that your car insurance company took into consideration your Geography as a risk factor. What makes Houston at a higher risk is because it is the 4th largest city in the U.S. It would mean that more vehicles will be on the move at any given time, giving a higher probability of a car accident to occur. And the insurers don’t like higher probabilities of accidents because that will mean more automobile insurance claims. We’re not just talking about higher incidence of road accidents, but also higher incidence of car theft and vandalism. For sure, area with a high crime rate qualifies automatically for a higher car insurance premium. However, Deidre, you can reduce your premiums too on account of a good driving record. If you can establish that you are not a road risk, your car insurance company will recognize this and will give you discounts on your premiums or they will give you higher deductibles for your comprehensive car insurance coverage.

Reader’s Question:

If I get a ticket in Las Vegas, Nevada for running on a red light and having no car insurance, will I have to get SR22?

Molly

Las Vegas, NV

In the State of Nevada, being convicted of disobeying a traffic signal or stop sign in Las Vegas is worth 4 demerit points on your driver’s license. Driving without car insurance does not give you demerit points but does come with grave penalties.

Las Vegas, Nevada mandates that all registered automobiles must have minimum liability insurance coverage of 15/30/10. Should the car insurance coverage lapse while registration is still current, the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles may suspend the vehicle registration and charge a $250 reinstatement fee.

If you have your license suspended because of your recent violations, or total demerit points on your driving record, you may be required to file a SR-22 with the DMV to recover your driving privileges. When you are required to file an SR22, Proof of Financial Responsibility, the period of required coverage begins when you reinstate your driver’s license. In the State of Nevada there is no time limit or statute of limitation on SR-22 insurance requirements. If you do not keep the coverage continuously during the required period, your license will be suspended. To find out what your total penalties will be for your tickets, contact the Court or entity listed on your traffic citation.

Reader’s Question:

I just moved to Newark, New Jersey, do I need to purchase car insurance in my state? Also, I usually hear people talking about Dollar a Day, what does it mean in New Jersey?

Ellen

Newark, NJ

Car insurance is mandatory in New Jersey, but the type and cost of any insurance coverage can differ significantly. There are two general types of car insurance policies in New Jersey, they Standard and Basic Policy. The Standard Policy covers a number of different coverage options and the opportunity to purchase additional protection. This type of auto insurance policy is chosen by most New Jersey drivers. On the other hand, the Basic Policy normally cost significantly less than a Standard Policy, although it provides limited benefits. This policy is not for everyone, but it does provide enough coverage to meet the minimum insurance requirements of New Jersey law. The Basic Policy is an option for those individuals with few family responsibilities and few assets to protect (including income from a job).

The Dollar a Day is what Newark, New Jersey calls “the Special Automobile Insurance Policy (SAIP), it is a new initiative to help make limited car insurance coverage available to drivers who are eligible for Federal Medicaid with hospitalization. Such drivers can get a medical coverage only policy at a cost of $365 a year, or $1 a day. Those who are currently enrolled in Federal Medicaid with hospitalization are eligible for the Dollar a Day policy. You are eligible for this policy if the Card Run Identifier on the upper left of your Medicaid ID card has an asterisk “*” after the code and “SAIP” is printed and located on the lower right of the card. In addition, the Dollar a Day policy can be obtained at most car insurance agencies.

Auto Insurance Cancellation In Maryland

Reader’s Question:

What is the difference between cancellation and non auto renewal of car insurance coverage in Columbia, MD?

Dustin

Columbia, MD

Cancellation takes place when the auto insurance that had been providing coverage decides not to sell insurance to you anymore, and the non auto renewal usually occurs when the policyholder neglects to pay the auto insurance company a premium. Generally cancellation makes it harder to obtain auto insurance than a non-renewal does.

Non-renewal means that the current insurance policy chose not to renew the insurance policy when it came time to being due again. Normally, this happens because the person covered on the policy makes too many claims during the time they were insured, such as driving under the influence, too many at-fault accidents, or too many tickets during the last three to five years. In case of of non-renewal, the insurance provider cancels the contract with the policyholder and, depending on the location; the driver of the vehicle would have to find comparative vehicle insurance. The insurer is required to send a notice of non renewal – usually thirty days – with the reason to drop your policy.

If you don’t pay your auto insurance premium on time, the car insurance provider has the option to cancel or cancel the policy. Your car insurance policy can also be terminated for misrepresenting information insurance providers find necessary about your risk level as a motorist or losing your driver’s license because to DWI or with an expired, revoked or suspended license. Some insurance providers may terminate your car insurance policy at any time, given that they give the amount of notice required by law, just because you are found to be a non desirable motorist.

Arkansas Car Insurance Coverage For Good Drivers

There have been car insurance laws in the state of Arkansas for a long time, but it wasn’t until the late nineties that the state really started to crack down on people driving without insurance. They did this by creating a verification program using a system that catalogs people’s vehicle identification numbers (VINs) and their status of insured or uninsured. It is a computerized system that flags a vehicle identification number if the policy to which it is matched has been reported as no longer valid by the car insurance company it was with.

There are certain requirements for a basic car insurance policy in Arkansas which all drivers are required to have. If you want to transfer the title of your car to someone, or register your vehicle, Arkansas car insurance coverage is something that you have to have. Here are the types of coverage that are required by Arkansas car insurance law:

  • Injury/death for a single person–$25,000
  • Injury/death for multiple people-$50,000
  • Property damage–$25,000

Although this amount of coverage is what is required, it is often much less than what is actually necessary for a driver in this state. To find out the level of car insurance coverage that you truly need, speak with your insurance agent and discuss the details of your policy.

If your vehicle identification number is flagged among the office of motor vehicles records as being without a valid insurance policy, a thirty day period is given during which no action is taken. However, if after that month your policy is still canceled and you have not gotten one with another company, then your registration will be canceled, and if you want to get it back then you have to show proof of car insurance.

What Is The Cheapest Used Car Insurance?

Reader question:

My parents have always dealt with my insurance before. Now I need to get the cheapest used car insurance policy that I can and I would like to know how to do that. Can you help?

Max

Sure I can.

The first time that you enter the real world and start handling all of your own affairs the way that you never did in college can be scary, so it is important to put extra thought into how you handle things like your car insurance and other bills. As a young person, you might not be making an amazing salary and getting the cheapest used car insurance can be key to getting your bills paid and still complying with the law. Here is a list of what NOT to do when shopping for a used car insurance policy.

  • Do NOT fall in love with the first car insurance quote that you see. Like any relationship starting out, you have to get to know it first and make sure you don’t like looking at the other car insurance quotes better. Pick a link and go to a website that allows you to fill out a questionnaire and then get instant online car insurance quotes from several different companies, and the research each company to see which you like the best.
  • Your used car is not a palace. If its exhaust smokes more than a tugboat, then you probably do not need comprehensive and collision car insurance coverage. The general rule is that if the car is worth less than a thousand dollars, you only need the basic liability insurance.
  • Maybe you want to stick with the same auto insurance company that your parents have. If so, don’t let them take all the info you had on your parents policy and use it again on a new one. Get an annual review so that you can see what kind of discount you ca get now after several years of driving.
  • Are you renting an apartment of condo? Buying a home? You can get renter’s or home owner’s insurance from the same company as your car insurance and thus qualify for a multiple policy discount, making all of them cheaper.
  • If you get a fender bender, don’t report it. Cover the damage out of pocket so that you don’t create a claim history.

Cheap Illinois Car Insurance Rates For Good Drivers

September 6, 2007 by fashun · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Good Driver Insurance

The state of Illinois carries a particularly had line when it comes to mandatory car insurance laws. Although this may seem bad for the person caught without insurance, it helps bring Illinois car insurance rates down. What some people don’t realize is that an accident in and of itself isn’t a huge cause in the rise of car insurance rates. As a matter of fact, the number of fraudulent claims and accidents involving uninsured motorists are big causes of the driving up of rates in states like Illinois every year.

Whenever you go to get your registration in Illinois, they check to make sure you have car insurance, and you can not renew it without proof. The proof of car insurance is a card with all of your insurance information that your car insurance company sends you whenever you first get a policy or when you renew it. You are required by the state of Illinois to have the following car insurance coverage:

  • Injury/death liability for a single person is $20,000
  • Injury/death liability for multiple people is $40,000
  • Property damage liability is $15,000

If you are out driving without car insurance, the expenses are huge. If you get pulled over by a cop for committing a traffic violation, or even for something small like having a light out, your insurance will be checked. If you don’t have it, you get hit with a five hundred dollar fine. It’s even worse for people whose plates are already suspended because they’ve driven without insurance before. For them, the amount is a thousand dollars.

Even if you aren’t caught while driving, you can still be found out for not having car insurance coverage. The reason for this is that the Illinois DMV has a computer system that randomly mails questionnaires to people and you have to fill it out to provide your car insurance information. If you don’t fill it out with the information, you could be fined.

Cheers,

Fashun Guadarrama.
