Good Driver Car Insurance Coverage
Reader’s Question:
My friend is asking me to loan my car to her because her car is in the repair shop. What I would like to know is if she’s involved in a car accident, whose auto insurance coverage would pay for the damage? Would it be mine or hers? We are both from St. Paul, Minnesota.
Tatiana
St. Paul, MN
With your question, I am assuming that your friend has her own auto insurance policy. If that is the case, in an event that she is involved in a car accident using your own vehicle it her own car insurance policy that would cover for her injuries. However, the case is different though if she doesn’t have car insurance policy. If that is the scenario then, according to the Minnesota Department of Commerce the “basic economic loss benefits” will be covered by your car insurance company.
As to the damage incurred on the vehicle, it will be paid by your own auto insurance company. This is depending though if you have collision and comprehensive policies. For other cases, it might also be covered by the car insurance policy of the other vehicle.
For more information, do check the information on your auto insurance policy. Also you could ask your car insurance agent in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Should I Trust My Car Insurance Agent?
Reader’s Question:
I had an accident two weeks ago in Sacramento, California where I live, but I found out that my insurance will only cover the hospital bill of the driver I got into an accident with. My insurance said that my coverage will only be limited to personal injuries and not property damages. Was I swindled by my insurance agent?
Joseph,
Sacramento, CA
Well, Joseph, it seems you are a classic insurance buyer where you sign first and then ask questions later, when you’ve already gotten into an accident. Thinking you have an insurance coverage but not really understanding what and how much your insurance will cover is just the same as wearing a body armor made of cardboard in the interior. You’re giving yourself a false sense of security this way, if I may add. Joseph, I think what happened is, you bought what is called the Personal Injury Protection auto insurance or better known as PIP. The PIP is mandatory in 46 states and their cities including Sacramento, California, so, we might call them your basic insurance. Well, at least your PIP covered injuries inflicted. When accidents really are that bad, injuries to persons are much expensive rather than those damages to properties. Imagine, you or the other driver were put into comatose or needing surgery and will be confined to around 3 months in a hospital, can you imagine the bill that would amount to? If you’re really on a tight budget, personal injury protection auto insurance wouldn’t be that bad. As we say, as long as I breathe there is hope, at least being alive or having the means to stay alive is more than anything we can ask for. Damages to property won’t really be that a big thing when you know you just cheated death. So, drive safely.

Very Cheap Rental Car Insurance
Reader’s Question:
How do I insure a rental car overseas? I’m from Charlotte, North Carolina.
Ian
Charlotte, NC
Make sure that the car you’ve rented in the U.S. will still be covered if you drive it overseas (i.e. in Canada or Mexico) and know this before signing the contract.
You can buy the rental company’s insurance if you rent a car overseas. Failure to do so could possibly put you inside an overseas jail if you have an accident. Virtually all car insurance policies purchased in the United States do not provide coverage overseas. It’s always wise to buy the rental car company’s insurance when renting a car overseas.
Use a recognized brand-name rental company based in the U.S.
Ask for the breakdown on what is included in the rate when renting a car overseas. Most insurance companies’ contracts include liability insurance. Fire and theft may also be covered but one thing that’s not covered by most rental agreements is collision.
I Need Cheap Non Owners Auto Insurance
Reader’s Question:
If Im driving a company car, do I need to use my own insurance?
Molly
Thank you for asking.
All vehicles that is being use in the public road must be insured by the owner in accordance with the state laws. You company is the one responsible for the insurance and for making sure that the vehicle that is being used by the employees are properly insured.
In case of accident, the insurance usually follows the vehicles,, so the insurance on that vehicle should be used as the primary insurance, and your own insurance will kick in if the damages on that vehicle exceed the limits of the insurance on that vehicle. So in most cases, if you are not driving your own vehicle, if its owned by a friend or by the company, you are not required to use your own insurance on that vehicle
It is usually advised that you carry a non owners insurance policy to cover yourself if you are driving some one else’s car. In case the owner of the vehicle insurance lapse or if the limits on the policy are low, then this would give you an additional insurance protection.
You might need to contact your company’s insurance provider to check on the insurance policy on the company vehicle and check the coverage that is provided to you when you drive it.
Goodluck!

Car Accident Insurance Claim – What Not To Do?
Reader question:
I’ve made my car insurance claim. Now how do I get my money?
Estella
Great question.
This is the thing that hangs over all the thoughts of the person who has recently filed a car accident insurance claim. You are worried about your car, your injuries, your wages, and that check always seems to take too long. If you keep your head screwed on tight and maintain your patience, you only need to follow a few guidelines to expedite the arrival of that precious claims check.
- Remember your claim number. You don’t have to memorize it, but at least keep it written down on a piece of paper that you won’t lose. This will make it to where you can easily get into contact with whoever knows what the status of your car insurance claim is.
- If there’s only a difference of a few dollars between the amount that the adjuster wants to give and the amount you think you deserve, let it go! You should fight over the bigger things, but a hundred bucks isn’t worth it and it’s much better to just be able to get your car back.
- Don’t threaten to hire an attorney like that works. They get that a lot and won’t actually take you seriously until you really do hire an attorney, so save it.
- Always be polite and respectful to your claims adjuster. They’re just doing their job, and treating them like human beings can help speed up the whole process and get you the amount you want more easily.
- At the same time, don’t try to play buddy with the adjuster, because they won’t stand for that. Act professional and take the process smoothly instead of trying to get your adjuster to like you so that she will give you what you want.
- Be prepared. So long as you know the regulations your state that require a certain type of claims process, you have an idea of where things are going. Document everything from the accident itself to the actual claims process.

Will a Speeding Ticket Affect My Car Insurance Rate?
Reader question:
What happens to my car insurance rates if I get a speeding ticket?
Joe
Fantastic question.
There is a high likelihood that nothing at all will happen, because yolur car insurance company might not even find out. Car insurance companies learn about things like DUIs and speeding tickets whenever you first sign on board as a policy holder, and then once you have stared with them they check your motor vehicle report about once every three years to see what’s been going on. If you get your speeding ticket right after you sign on, then they might never even know, since most tickets drop off after three years.
However, even if they do know, in many cases they won’t raise your car insurance rates anyway. This depends mostly on whether or not the speeding ticket that you got was your first one. Like with at fault accident, most car insurance companies are willing to offer you forgiveness for your first serious moving violation without it affecting anything such as your rates or your safe driver discount. It’s also true that in many states the car insurance companies are required to let your first speeding ticket go by law.

What Is At Fault Car Insurance?
Reader question:
If I get into an accident, and it’s because the person ahead of me hit his brakes making me run into him, am I still considered to be at fault?
Logan
Yes, sorry to say.
It is such a dilemma when you are considered at fault when the other person did something negligent to help the accident along. However, in almost every situation, if you hit someone from behind then you are the at fault driver, and your case is anything but rare. The reason for this is that even though the other driver made the bad decision of slamming on the brakes, you should be aware enough of your surroundings to have control of your car and avoid an accident. Think about it. If you’re in a neighborhood where kids are playing and the person in front of you slams on the brakes to avoid a ball rolling out into the street, are they at fault, or are you for going so fast in an area where you shouldn’t?
The truth is that these accidents can easily be avoided just by taking in some of the processes of defensive driving. You can keep yourself safe from a rear end car accident at fault car insurance debate just by doing the responsible thing and always staying at least three seconds distance behind the driver in front of you, or five seconds in bad weather.
