Reader question:

My son is going off to college next month. How do I save on my car insurance with him?

Great question.

There are a lot of concerns that need to be on a parent’s mind when they send their kid off to college for four years, and car student driver insurance shouldn’t be the least of those concerns. As a student who is entering what we call the real world for the first time, your son will need your guidance in getting some of the basic things he will need while he’s away, such as car insurance. And considering the antics kids can get up to while they’re away are college, having that back up is a necessity.

There’s a lot of stuff that goes into how much you get charged for your teen’s car insurance.

  • Location.

If you’re teen is going off to school in a different state, then they will probably have different car insurance rates while they are there. Rates are often based on location, which is why when you get rate quotes online you have to put in your zip code first. If you intend to keep your teen’s car with insurance on it while they’re away, then the car has to have your name on it.

  • Grades.

Your kid can get a discount on car insurance just for doing what he’s supposed to do right now, which is succeed in school. A lot of car insurance companies, maybe even all of them, give good student discounts for teens that make at least a B average. All you need is a report card or the college equivalent.

  • Should they keep the car?

If you keep your kid insured while they go a long way away for college but you don’t send a car with them, then you can save a lot. Your kid will still be covered when driving someone else’s car, though.

  • Independence.

It might be a good idea to get your student to take out his own car insurance policy. This might teach responsibility which is necessary in someone who is new to adulthood, but you have to think about the consequences as well. Car insurance for people under the age of 25 costs a lot, and it’s cheaper if he is part of your policy.
