SR-22 auto insurance in Wisconsin

Reader’s question:

How do I reinstate my license after suspension in Wisconsin?

Michelle

Good question.

An SR-22 is a certificate or a document presented by the insurance company that certifies to the court or state that you have an auto insurance policy with a minimum liability limits. You will be notified or informed by the state if you are required to have this.

This is also a financial responsibility that is mostly required in some states from the the Department of Motor Vehicle or Public Safety if you get involved in an accident because of traffic violations such as DUI (Driving under Influence), suspension from parking violations and other unpaid fines, etc.

The length of time to carry this varies from different state. The common requirement is for three years. If you terminate your policy prior to the termination date, the insurance company will then inform the state that you no longer have the insurance.

If you want to reinstate your license, your driving records will have to be checked first. You also need to call DMV to check for any fees that you will need to pay in relation to your suspension. The usual reinstatement fee us $55. You will also need to make a letter that includes your name, date of birth, Wisconsin driver license number, Social security number, and your address along with the payment for the fee. Then send it to Wisconsin Department of Transportation. You will need to provide proof of insurance if your suspension is safety responsibility related.

Goodluck!
