Reader question:
I want to get a car with a good car insurance rating. What cars are those?

Great question, Mary Anne.
One of the biggest factors in your final auto insurance risk score is the type of car you drive, not just how you drive it. The car that you choose could make the difference between you paying several hundred dollars a year and several thousand. Even if you get a very old model of a normally expensive brand, then you could still pay a lot because for some cars, like those from Europe, even the parts and labor cost a lot more than other vehicles.
If you want to get the best rates on car insurance comprehensive coverage, you should get such not frequently stolen models as the Buick LeSabre and the Mercury Grand Prix. If you are looking for saving money on your collision car insurance coverage, then the GMC Yukon is the way to go. If you want to know what is the best kind of car to get for your car insurance premium, get the one that your car insurance agent hasn’t heard about. It’s the ones that have the most claims made about them that end up costing more for everybody else.
Cars that will likely get you bad ratings on comprehensive include the Jeep Wrangler and the Acura Integra. In this department, you also want to shy away from high performance vehicles and ultra luxury cars. As for the highest rates on collision insurance, we have the Kia Sephia and the Suzuki Esteem. While Kia tends to churn out vehicles that are on the safe side, the Sephia has a lot of claims involving injuries and property damage.
Remember when thinking about this makes and models that in the end your car insurance company bases their rate for you on their own personal history with the car in question and claims, although these statistics do probably correlate.
