Reader’s question:

How do I remove my SR-22? I live in Texas.

Good question.

In Texas, the SR-22 is a certificate of insurance that will show as a proof of your insurance that is required by law. This is presented in the Texas Department of Public Safety. It is a liability insurance for motor vehicle that serves as your certification by the insurance company to DPS.

There is a form called SR-26 that you can use to cancel your SR-22. You will need to inform your insurance company if you no longer needs the SR-22. It is the insurance company’s responsibility to inform the DPS if your policy has been cancelled or terminated. Your license or vehicle registration maybe suspended if your insurance company already presented the notification that your SR-22 has been cancelled when you are still required to present it. You may be required by the insurance company to present any documentation or certification from DPS that SR-22 can be now removed from your policy. If you believe the time period is up you may call DPS to verify this. DPS may also gives you information how many years you need to carry SR-22 policy if your time is not up yet.

Good luck!
